Perhaps the most popular of all Baroque-period orchestral compositions, the four vivid and immensely colourful violin concertos that make up Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons are a primary example of program music, the kind that takes inspiration from such outside influences as stories, places, atmospheres, and philosophical ideas.
